Police at the University of Maryland in College Park are warning students that one of their classmates was extorted out of an undisclosed amount of money after someone threatened to post nude pictures of him on Facebook.
The student told campus police Sunday that he had been the victim of a scheme in which the scammer may have taken the pictures during an online video chat session with a woman.
Authorities said the victim complied with the demands of the extortionist, sending $1,000 to a place in the Philippines. Police did not release further details but said they wanted to warn the campus about the danger of such incidents.
The University of Maryland Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit asked anyone with information regarding this incident to contact police at 301-405-3555.
