Man Armed With Knife Attacks University of Maryland Student Near Campus

A University of Maryland student was attacked by a man carrying a knife just a couple blocks from campus early Sunday morning.

According to campus police, the incident was reported in the 4400 block of Hartwick Road in College Park around 6 a.m.

The woman had just exited her parked car when a man with a knife approached her from behind, grabbed her around her neck and demanded she come with him, police said.

The victim was able to break free and run from the suspect, police said.

Sunday's attack was the third off-campus attack during the past month, which include two sex offenses and an attempted robbery.

"It's really concerning," graduate student Kendra Smith said. "There's a lot that has happened in the neighborhood and the recent ones have been at normal times when pedestrians are out not late at night, coming from parties or whatever."

Campus police have increased patrols.
