The University of Virginia is upgrading its computing core network.
The network serves as a pipeline for the exchange of information between sub-networks. These sub-networks connect more than 300 buildings at the Charlottesville campus with each other and the rest of the world.
Jason Weinstein with U.Va. Information Technology Services says the upgraded network will allow 10 times the speed and traffic of the existing network. He says it also will be more reliable.
Weinstein says in a news release that the upgrade will be completed in December.
The university also is upgrading wireless Internet connections in all buildings.
The university's new strategic plan includes focusing on big data research.
