The University of Virginia is taking the wraps off an electric vehicle charger.

U.Va.'s associate dean of students, Allen Groves, will have the honors Friday when he makes the first official "plug in" at the charging station in the university's Central Grounds Parking Garage in Charlottesville.

A fourth-year student, Kyle Smalkowski, worked with U.Va.'s Department of Parking and Transportation and Facilities Management to bring the charging station to the garage. It is funded by grants.

The station will draw its electricity from the garage's grid. A solar array on the roof delivers electricity to the grid.
