A man armed with a weapon was shot early Tuesday morning at Hains Point, according to U.S. Park Police.

Officers were closing Hains Point just after 1 a.m. when they encountered a man sitting inside of a vehicle in Parking Lot 10.

Police said the man became confrontational and was brandishing a weapon.  U.S. Park Police fired at the man, striking him at least once.  He was transported by helicopter to MedStar, where he is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Police said the man was in the vehicle alone. Exactly what led to the confrontation escalating and why the man was armed is still under investigation.

Police have not release the name of the suspect.

Hains Point is currently closed for the investigation.
