US Park Police Chief Announces Retirement

The chief of the United States Park Police is announcing her retirement.

Chief Teresa Chambers said Thursday that she plans to retire on Dec. 5, her 35th anniversary in law enforcement. She says it's time to pursue new opportunities. Chambers became chief in February 2002, but was dismissed two years later after speaking out in a newspaper interview about a lack of staffing and funds for her agency. She was ultimately reinstated in 2011 after a long legal fight.

Park police officers are responsible for protecting some major American landmarks, including the National Mall in Washington.

Chambers is a former Prince George's County police officer and a former police chief in Durham, N.C.

No successor was immediately named.
