US Airways says it's not interested in helping an animal rights group move its message. At least not if it means draping its planes in controversial ads.
The airline has rejected a second request by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, to wrap US Airways planes with an ad critical of Canada's legalized seal hunting, the Washington Business Journal reported Friday.
PETA wanted to cover planes with a picture of a seal accompanied by a blood-spattered tag line, "Canada's Olympic Shame -- End the Seal Slaughter." The Virginia-based group wanted to use planes that would be flying to and from Canada during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
"US Airways regularly reviews all of its advertising and sponsorship relationships, and potential relationships to ensure they are or would be consistent with out corporate image and culture," an airline spokeswoman told the Journal. "The company has decided accepting advertising from PETA would not be the right fit for us at this time."
PETA has yet to respond to US Airways denial of ad space, but after the first denial it said on its blog that it would try again:
US Airways is quite the global ambassador and thus is the perfect flying billboard to promote responsible travel. By placing our "Canada's Olympic Shame—End the Seal Slaughter" ad on the body of a few of its planes, US Airways will be doing its part to show Canada that the world won't rest until the cruel slaughter of baby seals ends.
