Two Virginia Republicans Skip Tampa

Allen, Rigell will miss GOP convention

Delegates are continuing to pour into Tampa for the Republican National Convention this week, and are hunkering down to brace for Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to develop into a hurricane.

But two Virginia Republicans aren't as worried about the tropical storm because they're staying home this year. Senate candidate George Allen and incumbent Scott Rigell of the second district are locked in tight contests. Allen says he and his wife plan to tour the state instead of partying the week away.

"I'm much better off being with Virginians, talking to voters here, and small business owners and families than being in Tampa," he says. "And so I'll be throughout Virginia, as will Susan."

The absence of the two Virginia Republican candidates is testament to how close their contests remain. Numerous polls show that the Senate race between Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine is dead even.
