Child Killed When Motorcycle Strikes Pedestrians

A young child was killed when a motorcycle struck a group of pedestrians in the 3500 block of East-West Highway in Hyattsville, Maryland.

The motorcycle was apparently involved in a crash with a car before it struck the pedestrians.

Investigators said it appears a motorcycle heading westbound on East-West Highway collided with a car that was making a left turn into a shopping center. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle.

Police said the motorcycle then crashed into four pedestrians, one man and three children, who were standing on the sidewalk at the crosswalk waiting to cross the street. One child, Alejandro Santos, 7, of Greenbelt, was killed.

The man and two other children were taken to the hospital. Officials said the man and one child suffered life-threatening injuries, and the other child, as well as the motorcyclist, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said preliminarily, speed on the part of the motorcycle rider appears to be a factor, but the collision remains under investigation.
