Two Virginia Men Charged With Transporting Moonshine

Truck, cargo van and 150 gallons of moonshine were seized

Two men face charges of transporting moonshine following an investigation by state and local authorities.

Virginia Department of Alcohol Beverage Control agents arrested Vernon Thomas, 76, of Chesterfield and Bernard Davis, 64, of Chase City, earlier this month. Thomas was arrested on Interstate 85 in South Hill. Davis was arrested on Route 58 in Boydton.

Authorities seized a truck, a cargo van, 150 gallons of moonshine and $510 in cash as part of the three-month operation.

The men are accused of transporting the moonshine from North Carolina to Virginia, Carol B. Mawyer with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control told the Progress-Index.

"The main purpose of this investigation is public safety," Mawyer said. "You don't know what you're getting. It's dangerous."

Davis and Thomas each are charged with illegally transporting alcoholic beverages in excess of one gallon and possession of untaxed distilled spirits.
