Two People Bitten by Rabid River Otter in Virginia

Two people are undergoing treatment after being bitten by a rabid river otter, Virginia Beach officials said.

The otter was found in the coastal community of Sandbridge on Wednesday, the Virginian-Pilot reports. The otter's body was sent to Richmond, where it tested positive for rabies.

The people bitten by the otter went to an emergency room and are being treated with a series of rabies shots, said Virginia Beach Environmental Health Manager Dan Horn.

Health officials encourage residents to report attacks and bites from wild animals and make sure their pets are vaccinated.
