Two Killed in Fatal Crashes in Northern Virginia Monday

Virginia State Police are investigating two fatal crashes in Northern Virginia Monday.

A vehicle driving westbound on Route 7 just east of Route 9 rear-ended a westbound backhoe in the right lane at about 7 p.m., police said.

The driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Geneva F. Owens of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, died at the scene.

The operator of the backhoe was not injured.

The road, which had been plowed, was slick, which is under investigation.

Earlier Monday, in Fauquier County, a man was killed when his SUV hit a snowplow head on near Marshall, Virginia. The victim has been identified as 63-year-old Steven H. Gibbs, of Linden, Virginia.

Virginia State Police say Gibbs' SUV crossed the center line and hit the plow head-on at about 7 a.m. They said speed and slick road conditions were factors in the crash.
