Two Desert Storm-Era Missiles Found in Va. Garden Shed

A Leesburg woman found a dangerous surprise in her garden shed Saturday: Two Desert-Storm era missiles.

Homes around the shed on Rockbridge Lane in Leesburg had to be evacuated as the Leesburg police and Loudoun County bomb squad responded to the scene at about 1:30 p.m. Those authorities called in military experts from Fort Belvoir to handle the ordnance.

The experts made the missiles safe by neutralizing their detonation systems. They used pinpoint explosives to detonate the devices, covering the missiles with sandbags to reduce the potential for any harm.

The missiles were then moved out of the neighborhood and to a safe location where they will be destroyed.

Police still don't know who put the missiles in the shed, or how they got there -- but police are cooperating with the military on the investigation.

Residents are now back in their homes, and the neighborhood has been deemed safe.
