Two Arrested for Allegedly Listing Stolen Car on Craiglist, Leading Police on Chase

Would-be buyer checked VIN of a car listed for sale and discovered it was stolen

Two people accused of listing a stolen car on Craigslist and then leading police on a chase through two Virginia counties are in custody, authorities said Monday.

Another suspect is still on the loose.

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office said the incident began when a woman responded to an online sales ad for a car. She met the suspects and saw the vehicle, but when she checked the VIN, she discovered the car had been stolen and backed out of the deal.

The would-be buyer then contacted police and gave them a description of the suspects.

A deputy found them in the parking lot of the Country Inn & Suites on Warrenton Road in Stafford, but they sped off, leading him on a chase into Fauquier County.

Other authorities joined in on the chase and eventually placed a tire-shredding strip on the roadway, after which the suspects fled on foot.

Ceante Barkley, 19, of Rapidan, Va., was taken into custody at the scene. Another suspect, Dorian Ward, 26, of Northwest D.C., was arrested around 7 a.m. Monday in a field.

Barkley is currently charged with conspiracy to receive or possess a stolen vehicle. Ward is charged with larceny and larceny with intent to sell.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are still searching for a third suspect.
