Red Line Service Restored After 2 Disruptions Snarl Commute

Train service has been restored along a portion of Metro's busiest line after two service disruptions stalled riders Thursday morning.

Service was initially suspended between the Gallery Place and Dupont Circle stations just after 7:30 a.m. Firefighters were investigating a report of possible smoke in the tunnel between the Metro Center and Farragut North stations, fire officials said on Twitter.

Metro says a stray current caused the smoke.

Service was restored for about an hour before if was shut down again to allow for track repairs.

The repairs were completed just before 11 a.m., and service was restored for the second time.

During the service disruptions, customers were encouraged to use travel alternates or the shuttle buses provided by the transit agency.

But with the first service disruption happening during the morning rush, large crowds of passengers were left waiting outside several Metro stations for space on the shuttles.

Some of those riders voiced their frustrations on Twitter.

"Absolute chaos at Dupont circle, wmata loading mostly full buses to Gallery Place with major stations closed. #unsuckdcmetro," River Wekiva‏ said on Twitter.

One rider said there was not cell phone service along part of the commute.

"You couldn't even send a text message to tell your work you would be late," the rider wrote.

The rider added that parents taking their children to work for "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" were being trampled.
