Two people were killed and four others were injured as a group of motorcyclists that stopped by the side of the road were hit by a tractor-trailer that veered off the road.
North Carolina Department of Public Safety officials said the motorcyclists, who were part of the Black Eagles Ryders motorcycle club, were on the right shoulder of Interstate 85 in Guildford County, North Carolina, early Saturday morning. They said there was a mechanical issue with one of the bikes.
A witness said the tractor-trailer drifted from the middle southbound travel lane and went off the road into all six motorcycles. One of the motorcyclists, Arnie Morris, 37, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was killed instantly.
Five other riders were taken to the hospital after the collision. Family members confirmed that Kenneth Jefferson, 51, of Chesterfield, Virginia, died Sunday after being critically injured.
Jerome Howard, 48, of Woodbridge, Virginia, is listed in stable condition. Three others, Caroline Campbell, 47, of Chesterfield, Virginia; Michael Robinson Sr., 47, of Woodbridge, Virginia; and Gregory Harmon, 44, of Bowie, Maryland, were treated for minor injuries.
The tractor-trailer driver, Daniel Serna, 34, of Plantation, Florida, and the co-driver, Jacob Salazar, 56, of Cutler Bay, Florida, were not injured.
North Carolina police said neither tractor-trailer driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs. Serna has been charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death.
Investigators believe Serna may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
