Tractor-Trailer Crash Leads to Lane Closures, Miles-Long Backups on Interstate 95 in Laurel

Southbound I-95 had a six-mile backup as of 6:50 a.m., with a three-mile backup in the northbound lanes

A crash involving a tractor-trailer and a car led to lane closures and miles-long backups on Interstate 95 in Laurel, Maryland, Friday morning, although traffic is now clearing up.

The backup on southbound I-95 was just about a mile shortly before 8 a.m. -- a huge improvement after cars were backed up six miles just an hour earlier.

The northbound lanes are now clear; there was a three-mile backup in those lanes at the height of the traffic trouble.

The crash occurred when a tractor trailer and a car made contact in the southbound lanes of I-95, police said. The cab of the tractor trailer ended up in the left lane in the northbound lanes.

The driver of the car has been transported to an area hospital in unknown condition.

Crews had to shut down lanes to clean up the debris field.

Several lanes were shot down in each direction in the wake of the crash.
