Delays on Blue, Orange Lines After Track Problem, Derailment

Riders on Metro's Blue and Orange lines experienced delays Tuesday morning after two separate issues caused service disruptions, and the Yellow and Red lines had some trouble as well.

Blue Line train service was suspended between the Franconia and Van Dorn Street stations for much of the morning rush Tuesday. Metro said a track problem outside the Van Dorn Street station caused the service disruption.

Train service between the two stations was restored at 7 a.m., but Metro said riders may still see delays in both directions. Trains between the two stations were already single-tracking as a part of Metro's SafeTrack plan.

Riders on the Orange Line also experienced delays after a high-rail excavator derailed outside the Dunn Loring station at about 4:20 a.m.

Trains on the Orange Line were single-tracking between West Falls Church and Vienna for much of the morning.

Metro said the excavator, which is similar to a small crane, has been rerailed. Regular service was restored at about 7 a.m.

In addition, Metro said Yellow Line delays were possible in both directions due to congestion from the delayed Blue Line trains.

Also, Red Line train offloaded at Union Station about 7:25 a.m. due to a brake problem, and an Orange Line train offloaded at Cheverly about 10 minutes later due to a door problem.
