3 Tour Buses Involved in Beltway Crashes

13 people were transported to local hospitals

Three tour buses were involved in rear-end collisions Wednesday morning on the Inner Loop of the Beltway, sending 13 people to the hospital.

The incident happened just before 10 a.m. near Route 201 in the Cheverly/Greenbelt area. A middle school from Dallastown, Pa., was on the way to the District for a day of sightseeing when a box truck rear-ended one of the buses. A separate crash involving two other buses in the caravan occurred farther back in traffic near Kenilworth Avenue.

The initial rear-end collision caused moderate damage to the rear end of the bus, according Prince George's County Fire and EMS. The bus engine was damaged, disabling the bus.

A total of eight people on the bus complained of neck and back pain. Five people from the second bus, including four students, complained of illness or injury. No injuries were reported on the third bus.

More than 80 students and chaperons were evaluated by firefighters and medics at the scene. Thirteen people were transported to area hospitals with what were considered minor injuries.

Maryland State Police officers are investigating the crash.
