Toddler Accidentally Shoots Himself

Authorities: Gun was stolen

A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself with a loaded handgun.

Early Monday morning, officers responded to the Cortland Apartments in Hagerstown, Md., and found a toddler with a gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities said he'd found the gun under a bed in one of the apartments and pulled the trigger on his own.

The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital in Washington County before being transferred to Children's Hospital in the District.

Marcus Longus, the toddler's 16-year-old brother is being held on a $25,000 bond. Police believe the gun, which had been reported stolen, belonged to Longus. They have also charged him with obstructing and hindering, giving a false statement, and underage possession of a firearm.

Officers questioned six people in the apartment and later arrested Fantasia Rivera. Investigators believe the 17-year-old hid the gun on a nearby playground after the shooting.

Rivera will face the same charges as Longus. Both are being charged as adults.
