Timed Entry Passes Booking Up Quickly for African-American History Museum

If you were hoping to check out the Smithsonian's new African-American history museum on a weekend, you're out of luck through October.

The Smithsonian began assigning free timed entry passes to the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the museum's website Saturday morning.

The museum will open Sept. 24 after a dedication ceremony that President Barack Obama is scheduled to attend.

By Saturday afternoon, tickets for the museum's opening weekend and the next few weeks were taken. There are still some tickets available for 14 weekdays in October.

The museum will begin distributing same-day timed entry passes the on September 26. Passes for November and December will be released in September, according to the museum's website.

The museum said the timed passes will allow as many people as possible to visit the museum while maintaining a smooth flow of entry. Visitors will be admitted at 15-minute intervals and can stay as long as they like.

Timed entry to the museum will continue indefinitely.
