Three-Alarm Fire in Montgomery County

Firefighters evacuated from building

Firefighters were evacuated from a Silver Spring building where they battled a three-alarm fire Tuesday afternoon.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue was called to an apartment building in the 2300 block of Terrace Drive about 2:15 p.m. The first arriving units found fire in a second-floor apartment. It quickly spread to an attic and other units, and second and third alarms were called. Several more fire companies responded.

Firefighters were evacuated from the building as the fire spread. They then engaged in a defensive attack from outside the building, News4's Shomari Stone reported.

The fire was extinguished before 5 p.m.

No injuries have been reported among residents, but two firefighters were injured -- one minor, one serious but non-life-threatening.

At least 20 units were damaged, and about 80-100 residents were displaced, Stone reported.
