Thousands Sign Petition for ALS Drug

Nearly 500,000 people have signed a petition to get FDA approval of a potentially life-saving drug for patients with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

The Change.org petition went to Congress Wednesday night and calls for GM 604 to be fast tracked for approval. The quick approval would make the drug available for patients and allow it to be covered by insurance.

If the FDA does not act, it could take three years for the drug to reach the market.

"These people that are fighting for their lives have a choice of death versus a chance to live with this drug, which has already shown efficacy," said Frank Burroughs with Abigail Alliance.

ALS is a deadly neurological disease with no cure.

Most patients are given two to five years to live.
