A sea of thousands of candles illuminated the National Mall Friday night to remember fallen law enforcement officers across the country.
The 28th Annual Candlelight Vigil honored 252 officers whose names have been added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
Three of the names called during the solemn "roll call of the fallen" were officers from the D.C.-area: Montgomery County Police Officer Noah Leotta, Prince George's County Police Officer Brennan Rabain and Deputy Director of the D.C. Department of Corrections Carolyn Cross.
Leotta, 24, was killed last December by a suspected drunk driver.
Leotta's death has been at the center of legislation recently passed by the Maryland General Assembly requiring convicted drunk drivers to use ignition interlock devices. The devices require drivers to pass a Breathalyzer test in order to start the car.
Rabain, 26, was killed in a crash in Lanham, Maryland, in March 2015.
Cross, 64, was murdered in her Alexandria home in September 2014. She had worked in corrections for more than 35 years.

The ceremony was held at the National Mall this year because of construction taking place near the police memorial.
