They're Watching You

Maryland drivers brace for speeding cameras

You’re running late for work. You think no one is watching, so you speed through that construction zone. Starting Thursday, that type of decision will cost you on Maryland roads.

A new law allows surveillance cameras to record Maryland drivers who are going too fast. The owner of the speeding vehicle will be sent a ticket.

Speed cameras are already legal in Montgomery County. According to the county’s state’s attorney, just having the cameras has already made an impact.

“Accidents and traffic fatalities are down. Overall speeds are down. It’s been a positive effect,” said John McCarthy.

Violators caught speeding in construction zones will be fined $40.

Now is a good time to get over that text message habit while behind the wheel.

A $500 ticket awaits any Maryland driver found writing or sending of text messages. However, there is a loophole that allows you to read a text message.

The idea is that a hefty fine will force drivers to keep both hands on the wheel. Officials believe the inconvenience is worth the lives it will save.
