Theft From Car a Reminder to Lock Your Doors

Video of a thief casually opening a car door in Chevy Chase, Md., is a reminder that people should lock their car doors.

A homeowner’s surveillance camera caught a man who allegedly entered three unlocked vehicles on a driveway in the 8600 block of Village Park Place after 2 a.m. Dec. 31. An electronic device was taken from the third vehicle entered, according to Montgomery County police.

Police believe the same man entered a car three between 11 a.m. Dec. 30 and 11 p.m. Dec. 31 in the 3700 block of Village Park Drive, disturbing the contents of the car but not taking anything. The owner of that car wasn’t sure if it had been locked, police said.

“Ninety percent of our theft from autos still involves unlocked vehicles,” Montgomery County police Capt. David Falcinelli said.

Such crimes were down 17 percent last year, Falcinelli said, but those perpetrators are notoriously hard to catch, News4’s Jackie Bensen reported.
