Montgomery Seeks Harsher Penalties for Group Thefts

Gazette.net: “A Montgomery County councilman is working with state lawmakers on a bill that could result in harsher penalties for those who commit crimes in groups. The push for legislation comes about two weeks after a group of 25 people coordinated a robbery at a Germantown 7-Eleven. The group, which included youth, stole snacks and drinks. The group was referred to as a flash mob, but Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said it does not meet the technical definition because the theft was not coordinated using social media, like Twitter. Montgomery Police announced Friday that 17 people have been charged with misdemeanors for stealing from the convenience store. Those charges, however, aren’t enough, according to Councilman Craig L. Rice (D-Dist. 2) of Germantown. They are being charged only with the items they individually stole — not with what the group stole — but the crime as a whole was more serious.”

Marion Barry’s Bad Automotive Luck: A Retrospective

Washington City Paper: “So, Marion Barry has car troubles again. What else is new? The Ward 8 councilmember was in the news yesterday after he was spotted driving down Pennsylvania Avenue with the rear bumper of his silver Jaguar rattling along the pavement. Barry told The Washington Post that the car had been the victim of a hit-and-run while parked outside his home. It also apparently had been keyed. "When you live in the ghetto, this happens." Maybe. But when your name is Marion Barry, it happens even more.”

Naked Church Goer Arrested

Stafford Co. Sun: “A man who police say walked around naked in several different areas of Stafford on Tuesday has been arrested. Daniel Randolph Heflin, 22, was incarcerated following a few appearances Tuesday without clothing. According to Maj. David Decatur of the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office a man noticed another man walking on Belle Plains Road at about 9 a.m. with no clothes on. At about 11:30 a.m. the clothes-free man was seen at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 20 Boscobel Road. He came to the church with a book and a woman there told him he could not come in like that, police said. He then left the church.”
