The Night Note: Obamas Volunteer, Rabies Scare, Confederate Statue

The following stories have been hand-selected by the Assignment Desk at News4:

Obamas Volunteer at D.C. Soup Kitchen

President Obama and his family paid tribute Monday to slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. by serving hot lunches to the needy in Washington. The first family served lunch and spoke for about an hour with about 100 guests at the So Others Might Eat soup kitchen and homeless-service provider.  "We got a lot of struggle in this neighborhood," a man shouted to Mr. Obama as he entered the facility, in a hardscrabble section of the city just north of Capitol Hill. Confederate Statue Survives

The bronze statue of a defeated Confederate soldier, his back turned solemnly to the north, has lorded over Washington and Prince streets in Old Town Alexandria since 1889. It is still standing, despite years of weather, protests and even a van crash that toppled it.  On Sunday, the latest attempt to fell the soldier came from a burst water main. (Washington Post)

Rabies Scare

No parent wants to receive a phone call telling them their child may have rabies. Maryland health officials have been making those calls after a calf at the Hard Bargain Farm in Accokeek tested positive for rabies. Officials are contacting any and all groups who visited the farm on or since December 21.Officials from the state say records indicate that recent group visits included children from Montgomery, Prince George's and Charles Counties, as well as the District of Columbia.
