Teen Killed by Car in Anne Arundel

Police say victim was wearing dark clothing, not in crosswalk

Police in Anne Arundel County are investigating a crash that took the life of an 18-year-old woman in Annapolis Friday evening.

Investigators say that Ajia Owens, of Severn, was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk when she was struck on the north side of the intersection of Solomons Island Road (Maryland Route 2) and West Street shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Police say that Owens was attempting to cross Solomons Island Road and ran out in front of two vehicles traveling north on that road. One vehicle broke in time to avoid Owens, but the second, a Jeep Wrangler driven by 26-year-old Johnathan Shipp of Edgewater, struck Owens with the right front corner of the vehicle.

Owens was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported, and no charges have been filed.
