Teen Dies in Crash on Way to School in Fauquier County

Two others were injured in the crash

One teenager is dead and his sister was seriously injured in a car crash while driving to school in Fauquier County early Monday morning.

Ian T. Heflin, 16, of Catlett, and Brianna E. Heflin, 14, were getting a ride to Liberty High School when the 1996 Toyota Camry they were in ran off the right side of Route 664 near Bealeton. The driver then overcorrected and ran into a tree in a ditch on the left side of the highway.

Ian, who was a cheerleader and lacrosse player, died at the scene.

"He always brightened everyone's day," said Lauren Cook, a friend of the victim.

Ian's sister was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver, a 17-year-old man from Catlett, was not injured. Virginia State Police did not name him, saying the crash remained under investigation and that charges were pending.

All three teens were wearing seat belts, police said.
