Teen Charged With Child Cruelty After Shooting Death of 3-Year-Old

A teenage boy has been charged with child cruelty in connection to the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old girl in Southeast D.C. late last month.

A 17-year-old boy who police did not name was arrested Monday, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Thursday night. He was charged with first-degree cruelty to a child.

Little Dalis Cox died after she was accidentally shot about by her 7-year-old brother about 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29. The shooting occurred in an apartment on the second-floor of an apartment on the 600 block of 46th Place SE in Benning Ridge.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier previously said detectives were investigating whether a teenager had brought the gun into the home.

Cox's father, Timothy Cox, said he has mixed emotions about the arrest. He has a relationship with the 17-year-old suspect.

Cox had dropped off his daughter at her mother's apartment and had been gone just 30 minutes when he got a call saying the girl had been shot.

"I loved her with all my heart. It's tough to have a 3-year-old daughter just being taken," he said.
