A 15-year-old girl is in serious condition after being hit by a car while riding her bicycle Thursday morning in Montgomery County.

Nicole Marie Polen, of Montgomery Village, was struck at Woodfield Road and Airpark Road in Gaithersburg, Md., just before 6 a.m.

She and a 16-year-old friend were riding their bikes in a crosswalk but were crossing against the light, authorities said.

Nicole's friend got across safely, but Nicole was struck by a sedan and thrown. An accident reconstruction team member said if a person is hit by a vehicle traveling 35 mph, they could be thrown up to 75 feet.

The driver, 30-year-old William Earle Maselas, of Olney, remained at the scene. He was not injured.

Nicole, a sophomore at Gaithersburg High School, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was wearing a helmet, police said.

Witnesses should call police at 301-840-2435. They may remain anonymous.
