Teen Attempts Suicide After Friend's Death

18-year-old shoots self after friend run over in Thurmont

Frederick County Sheriff's deputies are trying to establish why a teen apparently attempted to commit suicide after his friend was struck and killed by a car early Saturday morning in Thurmont.

Deputies were called to Black Road near the intersection of Eylers Valley Flint Road shortly before 2 a.m. after a resident reported a body in the road. Investigators found the body of 18-year-old Brandon E. Herbert, who had suffered injuries consistent with those sustained in a vehicle crash. Deputies also reported finding vehicle debris and skid marks in the road near Herbert's body, but no vehicle.

During their preliminary investigation, deputies learned that Herbert had been seen earlier in the night with his friend, 18-year-old Seth Fisher. When deputies arrived at Fisher's house in the 16000 block of Eylers Valley Flint Road, they noticed a Toyota truck that had damage consistent with the debris found at the crash site.

After knocking at Fisher's door without success, officers looked in the window and saw Fisher suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot would to his head.

Fisher was airlifted to the R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was still being treated as of early Saturday afternoon. An investigation into the accident and shooting is ongoing.
