Teammates Accuse UVA Suspect of Attacking Sleeping Student

Huguely alleged attacked teammate over a kiss

The latest allegation against the suspect in the death of a University of Virginia student suggests a capacity for jealous rage.

Three of George Huguely's former teammates on Virginia's men's lacrosse team said Huguely attacked a sleeping teammate in February 2009 after that teammate had kissed Yeardley Love, the Virginia women's lacrosse player Huguely is charged with killing, the Washington Post reported.

One former U-Va. team member said Huguely beat the sleeping teammate in his room after a night of partying. The player said Huguely was outraged over his teammate's encounter with Love, 22, a player on U-Va.'s women's lacrosse team who was dating Huguely at the time. Two other former men's team players confirmed the account.

Police reports obtained by NBC News show Huguely got into a fight with his father aboard their yacht in 2008. When his father called police, Huguely jumped overboard into the Atlantic Ocean. A boater passing by saved him. Officers said Huguely was drunk at the time.

In 2007, Huguely was charged with possession of an alcoholic beverage by a minor.

In November 2008, he was arrested in Virginia for public intoxication and resisting arrest. He reportedly threatened to kill the arresting officer.

The university has a policy requiring students to self-report their criminal violations to the school, but Huguely failed to do so, and university officials have said they did not know about these incidents.

U-Va. lacrosse Coach Dom Starsia quickly learned of the February 2009 incident and disciplined the two players, although both played in games that week, according to the former players, who spoke on condition of anonymity, and records of the games.

Love's roommate and the roommate's boyfriend found her battered body early Monday. Police have said Huguely and Love were once involved in a relationship, but that it had ended. Friends have said they dated on and off.

According to a search warrant affidavit, Huguely kicked in her bedroom door and told them her head hit a wall several times as he shook her. His lawyer has said the death was accidental.

Police arrested Huguely a few hours after Love's body was found.

A funeral for Love was held Saturday morning.
