Teachers' Union Complains of Campaign Handouts

A Maryland teachers' union files a lawsuit over the use of a logo in campaign handouts.

Maryland's largest teachers' union has filed a lawsuit over campaign literature that they say uses the union's apple ballot design to misrepresent whom the union is endorsing in the Democratic primary for governor.

The Maryland State Education Association filed a complaint Tuesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Rockville. The union says it doesn't want other campaigns using the apple design to make voters think the union has endorsed other candidates. The union says it has a trademark for the design.

The MSEA has endorsed Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown in the Democratic primary for governor. But similar handouts with an apple design are endorsing Brown's opponent, Attorney General Doug Gansler.

Katie Hill, a spokeswoman for Gansler's campaign, says there is no problem with Gansler's campaign distributing the handouts.
