Taxi Driver With Passenger Leads Police on Chase

The driver of an unlicensed taxi tried to escape a D.C. Taxicab Commission inspector while carrying a passenger.

The passenger hailed the taxi near the National Mall. The inspector saw the taxi and stopped it.

The inspector said the driver then physically assaulted her before driving away with the passenger in the back seat.

D.C. police and taxi inspectors pursued the unlicensed taxi in a chase that ended when the taxi hit another car and stopped at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue.

Inspectors impounded the taxi and confiscated the tags.

The driver was charged with assault on a police official, a misdemeanor.
