Tax-Free Week Being Held in Maryland

Maryland is offering a break from sales tax for back-to-school shopping.

Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week kicks off Sunday and runs through Aug. 20 in Maryland. Virginia held its sales tax holiday from Aug. 7 until Aug. 9.

In Maryland, qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less will be exempt from the state's 6 percent sales tax.

Some exempt items you may not have considered include bridal gowns, martial arts attire, scout uniforms, diapers and rented attire. Most accessories are not included. View a list of taxable and tax-exempt items online here (PDF).

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot will be promoting the upcoming tax-free week at various events throughout the week in Queenstown, Annapolis, Bethesda and Waldorf.

Virginia’s Tax-Free Weekend combined the typical back-to-school tax exemptions with hurricane and emergency preparedness items and EnergyStar and WaterSense products.

Virginia’s guidelines were similar to those set forth in Maryland. School supplies under $20 and clothing and footwear under $100 qualify for exemption from the state's 5.3 percent sales tax.

Retailers in Virginia may also choose to offer other items "tax-free" by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.
