Taking the Ice to Remember a Fallen Airman

Dozens of people took to the rink Wednesday in honor of a Virginia airman killed during a targeted attack on American military personnel.

A public memorial service was held at Charlottesville’s Main Street Arena for Airman First Class Zachary Cuddeback.

The William Monroe High School graduate died after a gunman opened fire on a bus in Frankfurt, Germany, just outside the airport.

Cuddeback’s friends and family say hockey was the only reason the 21-year-old would ever roll out of bed before 7 a.m.

Gathering at an ice rink seemed the most fitting goodbye.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff in Cuddeback’s memory.

A second airman, identified as Nicholas J. Alden, was also killed in last week’s attack.

Authorities in the U.S. and Germany are trying to determine the motive for the attack and whether the gunman acted alone.
