A suspicious package that shut down Massachusetts Avenue in northwest Washington has been cleared by police as posing no threat. The bag contained everyday items such as clothing.

The road was closed in both directions at least half an hour as police investigated.

The package was found near the Islamic Center of Washington in the 2500 block of Massachusetts Avenue.

The incident snarled the morning commute, and traffic is still heavy in the area.
