Suspected East Coast Rapist to Claim Insanity

Hearing scheduled for Friday

Lawyers for a man suspected in a string of attacks along the East Coast will put in issue his sanity, the Prince William County commonwealth’s attorney confirmed.

Aaron Thomas is set to go on trial for the rapes of two teenage girls and an attack on another in Dale City, Va., Oct. 31, 2009. He is linked to 17 attacks in Virginia, Maryland and Connecticut over the past 20 years, authorities said.

A mental competency hearing for Thomas is scheduled for Friday.

He has claimed having a split personality. His attorney says he was a patient at Georgetown University Psychiatric Hospital, but one doctor who examined him determined he was faking mental illness.
