PISGAH, Md. -- A suspect shot by a sheriff's officer died Friday evening.

Two officers initiated a traffic stop at Nelson Point and Mason Springs roads in Pisgah at about 3:25 p.m. The learned that drugs were in the vehicle and asked the driver and passenger to step out, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office. That's when they saw a large quantity of marijuana in the vehicle.

When one of the suspects jumped back in the car and tried to flee, a struggle between the suspect and the officers ensued, authorities said. The suspect allegedly tried to grab one of the officers' handguns at which point both officers fired on the suspect.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he died a short time later.

The officers have been place on routine administrative leave.
