Suspect Arrested in Murder of 68-Year-Old Man at Maryland Gas Station: Police

A suspect has been arrested in the murder of a beloved grandfather and husband who was shot and killed last week while pumping gas, Prince George’s County police say.

Alonzo Jackson was filling his car with gas at a BP gas station on Marlboro Pike in Capitol Heights about 7 a.m. Wednesday when he was approached by a masked gunman and shot. Jackson died at a hospital several hours later, police said.

The suspect sped off in Jackson's 2015 black Dodge Charger, which police later found in the District.

On Sunday, police arrested 20-year-old Demarko Wheeler, of southeast D.C.

Police said they received a tip from someone that helped them identify Wheeler.

Wheeler is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and related charges, police said. He is currently in the custody of D.C. police awaiting extradition to Prince George's County.

Jackson lived his whole life in D.C. and retired after working at Safeway for 30 years. He is survived by a wife, three grown sons and grandchildren.
