Surveillance Images Released in Fender Bender Robbery Scheme

Police believe rear-ended car related to fender bender robbery

Police released a surveillance image of a man they believe was involved with an apparent fender bender robbery scheme in Montgomery County.

At about 12:20 a.m. April 14, a 58-year-old man’s Volvo was rear-ended on Jones Lane near Carry Back Drive in Potomac, Md. When he got out of his car to speak to the other driver, he was approached by two masked men armed with a long gun and a knife, police said. They knocked him to the ground, duct-taped his ankles and wrists, and put him in the truck of his Volvo.

Police said the men drove the victim to several ATMs to get money from his bank accounts before releasing him at Poplar Grove Baptist Church about an hour after the abduction.

Surveillance images from that ATM show a masked man about 5-foot-6-inches tall with a thin build.

Police believe that incident is related to an April 3 incident. About 11:30 p.m. a 49-year-old woman’s Range Rover was rear-ended on Jones Lane near Turkey Foot Road. She did not stop but called police immediately, and the striking vehicle made a U-turn, police said.

The striking vehicle in both incidents was described as a white or light-colored truck or SUV.

Anyone with information about the incidents should call police at 240-773-5070.

Police advised anyone involved in a minor collision to contact them immediately and drive to a well-lit area to await police response.
