Sullivan Gets Year Added to U.Va. Contract

Deal now runs through July 2016

Five months after some University of Virginia board members tried to oust president Teresa Sullivan, the full board has unanimously voted to add a year to her contract.

Friday's action extends Sullivan's contract from five years to six. It now runs through July 31, 2016.

Rector Helen Dragas, the main force behind the failed ouster, asked for the motion that was offered by Vice Rector George Martin. Dragas said Sullivan is working hard to address issues of sustainable funding, academic quality and new delivery methods. She emphasized that the board and the administration are working together.

The board shocked the Charlottesville campus June 10 when it announced Sullivan would step down. After two weeks of protests by faculty, students and others, the board voted two weeks later to reinstate Sullivan.
