Study: D.C. Ranks Fifth Among Terrorism Hot Spots in U.S.

Targeted for terrorism 79 times in 40 years

    The District of Columbia is fifth in the nation as a terrorist "hot spot," according to a University of Maryland study, because it has been the target of terrorism a reported 79 times over the past 40 years.

    The  research shows that from 1970 until 2008, almost one-third of all terrorist attacks happened in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and D.C.

    Although the word terrorism may bring back images of 9/11, the experts say terror has come in many forms and with many perpetrators, including extreme right-wing and left-wing groups.

    The researchers said they have already heard from congressional staffers and intelligence officials with questions about their study.
