The District of Columbia is fifth in the nation as a terrorist "hot spot," according to a University of Maryland study, because it has been the target of terrorism a reported 79 times over the past 40 years.
The research shows that from 1970 until 2008, almost one-third of all terrorist attacks happened in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and D.C.
Although the word terrorism may bring back images of 9/11, the experts say terror has come in many forms and with many perpetrators, including extreme right-wing and left-wing groups.
The researchers said they have already heard from congressional staffers and intelligence officials with questions about their study.
