Six middle school students apparently drank alcohol before classes in Loudoun County, Va., Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office.

One of the students reported sick to the clinic at Lunsford Middle School in Chantilly, Va., about 10 a.m. School personnel reported the student to the school resource officer.

Five other students -- ages 12-14 -- in various stages of intoxication were later identified.

"I would like to commend the students who reported suspected alcohol use to our administration,” Loudoun County Public Schools representative Wayde B. Byard said. “They did the right thing in reporting potentially dangerous behavior."

None of the students needed medical attention. Parents of all six students were contacted.

“This situation serves as an opportunity for parents to remind their children about the dangers of substance abuse,” Sheriff Mike Chapman said.

The sheriff’s School Resource Officer Unit is investigating.
