Street Paver Shot and Killed in Southeast DC

Someone shot and killed a man who was working on paving a street in Southeast D.C., police say.

Barry Holmes, 57, was working in the 5100 block of Southern Avenue SE near the D.C.-Prince George's County line on Wednesday afternoon when he was shot.

Medics took Holmes to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

“It’s sad, I’m sure the family is devastated by this. You know, you got a guy out here. All he did today was come to work and he doesn’t get to go home to his family. It's very sad,” Police Chief Peter Newsham said at the scene Wednesday.

Holmes worked for Capitol Paving. His coworkers said he was talking with Southeast residents about job opportunities before he was shot.

Coworkers said Holmes had a strong work ethic and a giving heart.

His death marks the 50th homicide so far this year in D.C.
