Organizers of the 150th Great Frederick Fair are taking steps to ensure the event is free of the swine flu after the illness was detected in animals at other state fairs.
Maryland State Veterinarian Guy Hohenhaus says the Maryland Department of Agriculture will inspect swine participants throughout the fair and exhibitors should take precautions to protect themselves and their pigs.
Fair manager Becky Brashear says the fair expects to have 350 to 375 hogs this year, and each exhibitor must pass a certified veterinary inspection. Brashear says all animals also will be screened before being unloaded at the fairgrounds.
The nine-day fair begins Sept. 14. It is expected to include 18,000 exhibits, including livestock, horses, rabbits and poultry, as well as household and baked goods.
