Cody Compton, 20, and Jonathon Clark, 21, both of Stafford, were indicted for possession of an explosive device on Friday.

The Stafford Sherrif’s Office was executing a search in a home on Catherine Lane on an unrelated matter when they found the explosive.

Virginia State Police removed and disarmed the device without incident.

The Fire Marshal’s office says the device was intended to cause harm to people based on its construction.

Stafford County Fire Chief Rob Brown says these discoveries happen more often than they’d like.

“Unfortunately, our department is responding to a greater number of incidents involving homemade explosive devices. Oftentimes these devices are a result of curious experimentation which can result in deadly consequences," said Brown.
