Spotsylvania County Man Dies After Accidentally Shooting Self

Gun went off as man unbuckled seatbelt

A Spotsylvania County, Va., man died after a handgun he was carrying accidentally discharged when he reached to unbuckle his seat belt, authorities said.

The 45-year-old victim's name was not immediately released.

Sheriff's Capt. Liz Scott told the Free Lance-Star that the incident occurred Sunday after the man parked outside a store while his wife returned a rented DVD. The man apparently hit the trigger of a Glock handgun and was struck in the hip, Scott said.

The man had lost a lot of blood when a deputy arrived, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

It's not clear if the gun was in a holster or a pocket, Scott said.

Three or four children were in the minivan at the time of the shooting, Scott said.
